Aviation Studies

Air cadets are expected to know about a variety of aircraft related subjects. Within the air cadets we have a series of classifications (or levels) to work through as you study the syllabus.

Basic

When a cadet first joins they are known as a Basic Cadet, and do not wear a classification badge on their brassard. Basic training takes about 6 months and in that time the cadet is expected to cover six different subjects which are:

When the cadet has covered these six subjects and the tutor, who is normally a staff cadet, feels they have a suitable understanding of the subjects they cadet will now be classified as First Class.

First Class

After completing basic training the cadet will be awarded a First Class badge to wear on their brassard. They will then participate in more aviation studies that builds upon the basic cadet training to further the quality and understanding of the subjects being taught. First class training includes:

To pass the First Class qualification the cadet must sit an exam. It is a 25 question multiple choice exam and to pass the cadet must get 13/25.

Leading Cadet

After completing the First Class syllabus and passing the exam the cadet will awarded the Leading cadet badge to wear on their brassard. Again, the level of the subjects being studied will be increased and the subjects start becoming even more indepth and complex. To gain the Senior classification cadets will have to study two of the following subjects:

To pass this syllabus the cadet has to sit another 25 question exam with the same pass rate.

Senior Cadet

After completing and passing the Leading exam the cadet will wear the senior badge on their brassard. The cadet will then have to study two of the following subjects:

The cadet will have to take another 25 question exam, the last one that will need to be taken!

Staff Cadet

After completing the senior exam the cadet will no longer wear a badge on their brassard and be classified at Staff Part One. To gain full Staff Cadet classification the cadet will have to have an interview to demonstrate their knowledge of the corps and how it works, is the cadet passes the interview they will be allowed to wear a yellow lanyard. After gaining Staff Cadet there is no further training within the squadron the cadet will need to undertake. A Staff cadet will spend time helping out in the office and teaching the younger cadets.
