Joining 224 Squadron

Who?

Coming down for the first time can be a daunting experience, why not try and persuade a friend to come along you have nothing to lose! A parent or guardian is also recommended so they can fill out the forms, but this is not essential on your first night.

What?

The Air Training Corps (ATC), commonly known as Air Cadets, is a youth organisation that can offer a wide range of recreational and social activities. On your first night you could be doing lectures or dry training on rifles. The ATC is a military, voluntary youth organisation that welcomes anyone between the ages of 13 and 18 years of age. It is fully supervised by adult staff who have all had training and experience of being a cadet.

When?

Any Wednesday and Friday just turn up at 7pm and someone will be there to welcome you.

Why?

Joining the air cadets offers so many opportunities that other youth organisations just can't offer. You fly, glide, shoot, participate in leadership exercises and have the opportunity to go abroad to Cyprus, Germany, Belgium, Canada and more places around the world. As well as this you gain qualifications, build confidence and communication skills.

Where?

We parade (meet up) at the Territorial Army Centre in Hexham. You can find all other information on the Contact Us page.

What happens next?

For the first three months you attend you are classed as a probationer. After three months you will be issued with your uniform and 3822. This is your log book and must be taken to Parade nights and all ATC events. Most uniform is provided free but you may have to buy your own shoes and boots. Looking after your uniform can be difficult, especially if (like most new cadets) you've never had to shine your shoes. If you are stuck don't hesitate to ask an NCO or cadet, everyone is willing to help.
